The Gibbet on which Crucifixion was carried out could be of many shapes. At times the gibbet was only one vertical stake, called in Latin Crux Simplex. Frequently there was a cross-piece attached either at the top to give the shape of a T (Crux Commissa) or just below the top, as in the form most familiar in Christian symbolism (Crux Immissa). The most ancient image of a Roman crucifixion depicts an individual on a T-Shaped Cross. 2nd century writers also speak of the execution cross with the arms as outstretched and in the shape of the letter T (the Greek letter tau). Jesus is usually shown with nails in his hands. In 1968, archaeologists discovered in Jerusalem the remains of a 1st century crucifixion. They included a heel bone with a nail driven through it from the side. This suggests that the heels were nailed to opposite sides of the upright. This is currently the only confirmed example of ancient crucifixion on record. St. Peter was crucified upside-down (hence the Cross of St. Peter), because he did not feel worthy enough to die the same way as Jesus. St. Andrew, St. Peter's brother, was crucified on an X-shaped cross (hence the St. Andrew's Cross).
