The Holy Lance, also known as the Lance of Longinus, the Spear of Destiny, or the Holy Spear, is the Lance that pierced the side of Jesus as he hung on the cross during his Crucifixion. The Lance is mentioned in the Gospel of John (19:31–37). At least four major Relics are claimed to be the Holy Spear. This Armenian Version of the Lance is conserved in Vagharshapat the religious capital of Armenia. In a 13th Century Armenian text: “Holy Relics of Our Lord,” this Spear which pierced Jesus was brought to here by the Apostle Thaddeus also brother of Jesus. The text gives a Description that Exactly matches this Lance. In 1655, the French traveler Jean-Baptiste Tavernier was the first Westerner to see this Relic in Armenia.
